The Person of Jesus: What Would You Say?

“Jesus went out, along with His disciples, to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He questioned His disciples, saying to them, ‘Who do people say that I am?’ They told Him, saying, ‘John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; but others, one of the prophets.’And He continued by questioning them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Peter *answered and *said to Him, ‘You are the Christ.’” Mark 8:26-30

This post is the second in a series that encourages all Christians to think about how they would answer questions pertinent to Christian faith if asked.  In this series, I will post questions from an actual pastoral candidate questionnaire that I received from a Southern Baptist Church and give my answers.  I hope that’ll you’ll join in the discussion by posting answers of your own in the comment section.  Here’s the second question and answer of the series:

Who was Jesus?

The question is not “who was Jesus?” the question is “who is Jesus?”  Jesus is Lord [1] and He is alive. [2]  Jesus died on a Roman cross circa 30 AD, but he didn’t stay dead.  He was raised back to the life by the Father on the 1st Easter Sunday. [3]  Jesus was a born to a virgin [4] as a man circa 4 B.C. [5] through the miracle of the incarnation. [6]  He is truly man and truly God.  He is the eternal Son of God, the third Person of the Trinity who was, is, and is to come. [7] He was the agent of creation [8] and is the sustainer of the universe [9]. He is the Messiah promised by Old Testament prophecy [10].   His death on the cross atones for the sins [11] of any person [12] who turns from his or her sinful lifestyle [13] and submits to Jesus as Lord [14].  He is in currently in heaven sitting at the right hand of the Father [15] and will return [16] for His church [17] at the appointed time [18] when He makes all the things new. [19] Jesus is God. [20]
